Barack Obama has a lot on his plate this Thanksgiving.
But instead of eating turkey and mashed potatoes, he’ll have to swallow the reality that President Bush provided most of the food for this feast. Some of Obama’s old favorites-hot roll health care reform and sweet potato partisanship- might have to sit on the backburner until he overturns some of Bush’s menu items.
The Bush administration’s executive orders President-elect Obama must act upon immediately regard Guantanamo Bay, stem cell research and abortion funding.
Like a stinking Tupperware container full of old potato salad, Guantanamo Bay needs to go straight to the garbage. It’s the cranberry stain on the shirt of American legitimacy and is as unpopular as the aunt who has a few too many rum nogs. Obama needs to close this atrocity on his first day of office to show that America is back on the side of jurisprudence and the belief in human rights. Obama doesn’t have to pardon a Thanksgiving terrorist every year, but at least give them a fair trial.
Stem cell research is another issue where the tryptophan hit the Bush administration hard. Science fell asleep over the past decade and federal funding for stem cell research dried up once pro-lifers started giving civil rights to a Petri dish sex cocktail. In 2001, Bush cut off stem cell research funding to the National Institute of Health. Reversing this order could save millions of lives and create jobs in the public and private sector for research. Research that could cure your grandpa’s Alzheimer’s or uncle’s heart problems.
And don’t forget about abortion, the fruitcake of issues. No one really is pro-fruitcake but most believe it’s the individual’s right to choose whether or not they eat the dessert. The Bush administration shut down funding to international aid organizations that taught women about the issue of abortion. We need to reduce the number of abortions but not through banning the act. Let’s share the fruitcake and provide comprehensive sex education and tell the women of the world we support their right to choose.
These are just some of the executive issues that have been placed on Obama’s Thanksgiving table. However, these are merely the appetizers to the main course. Obama must be ready to swallow his promises of green energy, universal health care and ending the two wars in the Middle East. So maybe by next Thanksgiving some families can finally have a full table.
I hope he’s hungry.
He can have immigration and China for dessert.
